Keyboard and controls

Every key each surface listens for, and the two mouse gestures that are not obvious.

#Where these come from

Every table on this page is generated from the app's own keymap, and a test holds that keymap to the handlers themselves: a binding added without a line saying what it does fails the build. So a key listed here is a key the app really listens for, and a key the app listens for is listed here.

What no table can cover is the mouse, so the two gestures worth knowing are written out at the end.

#Playing

KeyAction
SpaceRoll the dice, then confirm the turn
Space (following)Let the opponent play once you have read the analysis of your move
Space (mid-turn)Swap the order of the dice, while the turn is not yet complete
Space (paused)Resume a paused clock
Left / RightLook back at the previous / next move played, with its analysis. Right past the last move returns to the game
EscapeReturn to the game from a move you are looking back at, dismiss the hint, or leave Zen mode

#Analysing a match

KeyAction
Left / RightPrevious / next move
Up / DownPrevious / next error
CSwitch between the checker and cube panels
N / Shift+NNext / previous move with a note, on a match saved to your account
SpacePlay or pause the replay, which advances the match on a clock. Only while the replay bar is showing, which the menu beside the board turns on
[ / ]Slow the replay down / speed it up, one rung at a time
MMute or unmute the replay, for this visit

Stepping by hand switches video follow-along off until the next play, so the board does not move under you while you are reading.

#Study

KeyAction
LeftUp to the parent, or to this node's own move row
RightDown to the first child, or to this node's own position row
Up / DownPrevious / next sibling
EndJump to the end of this line
EnterAnalyse the current position
DRoll dice and analyse what follows
LLucky line: the best rolls, three moves deep
UUnlucky line: the worst rolls, three moves deep
EEdit the position
DeleteDelete the current node
EscapeCancel an edit

#Transcribing

The transcriber has a keyboard layout of its own, larger than all of the above together, because entry speed is what the surface is for. The same list is in the app, under the ? in the transcription panel.

KeyAction
1 – 6Enter dice (two presses make a roll)
ERe-roll: throw away a misread roll and enter it again
⇧ 1 – 6Re-roll straight into that first die
↑ / ↓Cycle legal moves (or review past plies)
K / JCycle legal moves up / down (vim style)
SpaceRecord the selected (best) move
1 – 9Preview the Nth ranked move
EnterRecord previewed move / take a cube
DOffer a double
PPass a cube that has been offered
FRecord a forced dance (stuck on the bar)
MType a move by hand (illegal play)
ICorrect the board (illegal play)
RResign
U / T / ⌫ / DelUndo the last entry (takeback). T takes the cube instead, where one has been offered
Ctrl / Cmd ZBring back the last whole edit - a game an undo reopened, a tail an edit discarded - rather than one ply
⇧ Ctrl / Cmd Z, Ctrl / Cmd YRedo: forward again over the edit that was just brought back
EscBack to entry / close
VPlay / pause the video
← / →Seek back / forward 5 seconds
[ / ]Seek back / forward 30 seconds
, / .Playback speed down / up
LJump to the live edge (live streams only)
0Jump to the start (recorded videos only)
BRe-anchor the selected move to the current video time

Entry speed is what this surface is for, so it has more bindings than all the others together. The same list is in the app, under the ? in the transcription panel.

The video keys do nothing until a broadcast or a recording is attached, and the app hides them until one is. See Transcribe and broadcast.

#Overlay builder

KeyAction
ArrowsNudge the selected widget by a pixel, or by a whole grid square with Shift held
⌫ / DelRemove the selected widget
Ctrl / Cmd ZUndo, or redo with Shift held
Ctrl / Cmd YRedo
Ctrl / Cmd SSave the overlay
Ctrl / Cmd DDuplicate the selection
EscapeClear the selection

Bound on the document rather than on the canvas, so somebody who has just clicked a layer row or a palette button can still nudge and delete without going back to the canvas first.

#The board itself

KeyAction
Hold ShiftDraw on the board. The cursor becomes a crosshair, dragging leaves an arrow and a click a highlight, on any point, the bar or a tray; releasing Shift clears it
EscapeClear what you have drawn, while Shift is still down

A drawing is a sketch, for pointing at something on a screen somebody else is watching, and it is never saved or sent anywhere. The one exception is Draw on the analyse page, which saves it to the move.

And one gesture that no key covers: right-click a checker to play it with the dice in the other order.
